GDP (PPP), Per capita: Contradiction with Liechtenstein

[edit]

Both articles claim that Luxembourg and Liechtenstein rank 2nd.

Letzemburgesch

[edit]

This article mentions, at the end of the first paragraph, that one of the languages spoke in Luxumburg is "Luxembourgish". Would it make sense to put this language in its Letzemburgesch name and put in "Letzemburgesch"? Rollo August (talk) 09:26, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The language itself is referred to on the English Wikipedia as Luxembourgish; and given my previous experience reading Wikipedia, standard procedure seems to be to refer to languages within articles on the English Wikipedia with their English name, e.g. German and not Deutsch, French and not Français, Japanese and not 日本語.

Also, it’s Lëtzebuergesch, not Letzemburgesch. Tvx1 21:42, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also it's 'Luxembourg' not 'Luxemburg', that's German and it's not 'Letzemburgesch' it's 'Lëtzebuergesch' and no, on the English Wikipedia, the language is in English as it is the English Wikipedia. Atharva210 (talk) 18:58, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Banking and financial services in Luxembourg

[edit]

The article briefly mentions that financial services is an important economic activity. I believe this subject deserves its own subsection. I do not have much knowledge on this subject, so I cannot write about it. I actually came here in the hope to find more information on the history of banking in Luxembourg, which used to be an important tax haven (similar to Switzerland?), and on the role of e.g. the European Union in how it changed to the present situation.

Using British English

[edit]

Alright, I have a question. Why on earth shall we use American English for a country that teaches British English in its schools, and when spoken, more use British English, with the exception of Americans or those who lived there. Just asking, but doesn't it make more sense to assign the template "Use British English". Personally, it seems more logical. Please let me know your fellow inputs and opinions on this matter. I go to school in Luxembourg City and they teach British English and it's quite literally the case in most schools across the country. Kindly do let me know your opinion.

Thank you and have a nice morning/afternoon/evening/night! Atharva210 (talk) 18:55, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

[edit]

Article needs a far better map to position it in Europe. The current one is terrible! The info-box (or info-box adjacent) map is useless - other than the circle showing it "someplace in Europe, East (or Northeast) of France". There *should* (imho) be a map - early in the article - showing its location relative to Brussels, London, Paris and Frankfort. I suggest the most useful map would include Northern Switzerland and all of the Nederlands to allow easy mental positioning in Western Europe.98.17.42.35 (talk) 14:13, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can we get some help here....

Traditions

Luxembourg mostly have traditions that are German or related to Germany. For example, Buergbrennen is a tradition where people burn a straw doll named "Straw Man".[1] It marks the beginning of Spring and end of winter. There's also Bretzelsonndeg, this tradition allegedly started during the 18th century when women shouted the names of their desired man when they burned the wood during Buergbrennen. If the man feels interested to her, he would give the woman a pretzel (often sweet) on the fourth Saturday of Lent. If the women does in fact like the man, she will give him a rooster egg on Easter Saturday (Nowadays it's usually a chocolate egg). If she doesn't feel interested in the man or dumps him, she will give him a empty basket. Except on leap years, where the roles are reversed.[2]Luxembourg's national day is celebrated during June 22nd and June 23rd where citizens use fireworks. the government and people also organize events and parades.[3]

Some more Luxembourg holidays are from Christianity. Luxembourg celebrates Easter Monday, Easter Monday is a holiday where christians believe it's a day to rest. It's always celebrated on a Monday.[4] Also, there is Whit Monday. Whit Monday is called the second Pentecost because it's the next Monday after Pentecost. Some countries like Luxembourg have a national holiday on that day.[5] But also Luxembourg still celebrates holidays like Christmas, New Year, and Halloween.

Rights

Luxembourg according to Freedom House has good human rights. Violent crime is also very rare. With adequate prison conditions. Discrimation on basis of race, religion, age, or sex is prohibited by law. however, women have slightly fewer rights then men even though gender pay gap has been reduced. But, they have fewer senior positions then men.

There are also no major restrictions on where you live or where you go to school/work. Same sex-marriage has been legal since 2014. Also, Luxembourg has abortion rights. But, you need to request a abortion within the first trimster. Later abortions need to have two doctors to deterime if the pregnancy life or death.[6]
