"Biases in reporting" section

[edit]

The recently added "Biases in reporting" section is rife with grammatical errors and seems largely an expression of opinion rather than fact. Rsngfrce (talk) 12:12, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I just saw this. Genuinely wild that it still exists and is still positing opinion as fact. I suppose that's less important than edits to ensure that the word "black" is properly capitalized, right editors? 184.171.217.254 (talk) 17:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why hasn't the "Biases in Reporting" essay been deleted? I would delete it myself but I'm sure some editor will come behind me and restore it. 67.235.234.24 (talk) 07:44, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 28 December 2024

[edit]

Tawana Brawley rape allegationsTawana Brawley rape hoax – *Note: this article has been moved several times over the years to "rape hoax" and un-done because the move was not formally discussed. I wiill do this now. As several others have pointed out, refering to the incident as a "rape allegation" muddles the topic as the allegations were found objectly false and intentionally misleading during the trial and formal investigation. A hoax is defined as a, "a humorous or malicious deception" which applies here as Tawana Brawley knowingly made false accusations to decieve the court and general public. The term "Hoax" is universally used by American media to refer to the incident regardless of political leanings, such as by the New York Times, Retro Report, Associated Press, NPR, CBS, Washington Post [1], Huffpost, Daily Beast, Washington Times, Fox News, and New York Post. I believe that "hoax" is the correct term and not "fraud" as a fraud involves personal gain, and it is not so cut-and-dry as to determine if anyone benifited from the incident. It is nearly 40 years since the events occured, and the controversy has largley died down with the general public. The article is also catagorized under Category:1987 hoaxes and Category:Racial hoaxes and listed in the Racial hoax article.

Support seems to be closer to the common name, and clearer. PARAKANYAA (talk) 15:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the article should be moved. The case, and the deception proven by the courts, are explained in the first lines of the article, which would clear up any hint of doubt in case a person were to visit the article. I think the interest of this case does not lie entirely in the fact that it was a deception, but in the social implications that it aroused at the time of the event. Besides, I don't think that something like "objectively" is a valid word, and I mean that it is not valid for me in any context, the social implications (in this case, for example, race, class and temporal context) make something like objectivity not exist. That said, forgive my poor English, and following Donna Haraway's instructions on situated knowledge, I clarify that I am a white Spanish lesbian woman.
